Grit and determination brought Serena her win at the US Open

Dear Editor,

Those of us who watched the Ladies US 2012 Open final would agree that the pendulum swung both ways. First it was in Serena’s favour with a convincing win in the first set over defending champion Azarenka, and then next it was her turn to take the second set from Serena which seemed to threaten her with defeat.

As we approached the final set it was Azarenka leading at 5-4 and serving for the match, but it was not to be as Serena like a champion never gave in; she fought back to the end to clinch the trophy at 7-6. In her own words overcome with emotion she said, “Oh my God, I can’t believe I won,” but it was her grit and determination which has marked her career to overcome sickness and defeat.

When history is written the Williams sisters’ contribution to the game of tennis would forever be etched in our minds, as it was their father Richard who introduced two tiny kids with beads in their hair to the tennis arena, and made a prediction that they would one day become champions. Later he said that the younger one would take over from the older one, and so it was.

Congratulations to Serena and to Azarenka who was humble in defeat by acknowledging Serena as the deserving champion.

Yours faithfully,
V O Patrick
