Shot taxi driver was abusive after cell phone caution

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has denied the allegations made by taxi driver, Reagan Rodrigues, that he did not receive proper medical attention at the institution.

The allegation was made in a story titled “Taxi driver injured in drive by shooting”, published in Tuesday’s edition of the Stabroek News.

The GPHC said in a press release issued on Tuesday that in fact, Rodrigues had unceremoniously stormed out of the institution after he was cautioned by a doctor about the use of his cellular phone.

The press release said Rodrigues was triaged by a nurse at the Accident and Emergency Unit at 20:05 hrs on Monday. He was further examined by a doctor who immediately ordered medications and requested and x-ray for him and both were done.

Upon Rodrigues’s return to the trauma room, the release said, he was told that he will be examined by the general surgeon and it was while he was in that room he proceeded to use his cellular phone.

The attending doctor simply asked him to use his cellular phone in the sitting area while waiting and Rodrigues became annoyed and was verbally abusive to the doctor. He then unceremoniously stormed out of the hospital, the release added.

The hospital also stated it does not deny anyone medical treatment. However, it has zero tolerance for the meting out of disrespect to any staff member.
