Brazilian miner’s wife robbed of $1M

The wife of a Brazilian miner was yesterday robbed at gunpoint of $1 million as she waited in a car at Church and Cummings streets for her husband to return from the market.

Edilivsa De Olivera and her husband had gone to the market and her husband left her in the vehicle. Soon after, a man approached her, pointing a gun to her and demanding that she hand over the bag which contained the money.

According to Crime Chief, Seelall Persaud, after taking the money from the woman, the perpetrator escaped in a waiting car.

When Stabroek News visited the woman at her home, she said that the police have since collected video clips from a nearby store and she is hoping that this can lead the robber’s capture.

She indicated that she will visit the police station today and after being updated on the investigation, she would be in a better position to speak further with this newspaper.

Over the years, persons have targeted miners, most of who were accosted after leaving the bank or selling large quantities of gold. Police officials in the past have urged not only miners but the business community in general to be more vigilant when transacting money and carrying out business.
