GCC edges Old Fort 1-0

Farfan and Mendes hockey….

Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) edged out Old Fort 1-0 to share the lead with Hikers in their Farfan and Mendes first division hockey match played at GCC ground, Bourda Sunday.

The game’s lone goal was scored by GCC striker Kevin Spencer in the 55th minute of play in a very entertaining encounter.

Goal scorer GCC’s Kevin Spencer evades Old Fort’s Jason DeSantos during the Farfan and Mendes encounter at Bourda.

In a keenly contested match, Old Fort got their rhythm going early in the match creating the first real scoring opportunity after a defensive error in the circle lead to a penalty corner.

However, Old Fort’s effort was thwarted following a fine save from GCC goalkeeper Michael Xavier from a Jason De Santos strike
.
GCC gathered composure as the game progressed and pressed the game into the Old Fort end of the field by midway in first half but the South Ruimveldt-based side defenders Dwight Sullivan and Aderemi Simon proved difficult to pass while their young goalkeeper David Williams showed great prowess between the uprights.

As the first half wound down, GCC’s national midfielder Orland Semple produced a spectacular drive from the right side, evading several defenders and sent a deceptive flick up towards the top left hand corner of goal but Williams was equal to the task and made a spectacular save.

After many promising attempts at both ends on resumption Spencer finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when he received a precise through pass in the circle, guided the ball through the outstretched sticks of two Old fort defenders and slipped his shot pass the right leg of goalkeeper Williams.

GCC and Hikers are tied at the top of the pool with four points each at the end of the first round.

The tournament continues with the second round beginning on October 7 at Bourda.
