Lindeners should exhibit themselves as decent and disciplined as much as big and no-nonsense

Dear Editor,

It is so disheartening to know that the simple things that ought to be done – no-brainers – are left unattended by those in charge unless and until there is some form of complaint, disaster, confrontation or protest.  If they are written about, as I have done here, they will be read in a cursory manner and glossed over until there is a rude awakening, like the alarming erosion that is taking place at Phase Three of Wisroc Housing Scheme.

My main concern here is about a road leading in/out of Pine Street Nursery School, Industrial Area.  This road, as I comprehend it, was constructed mainly to facilitate easy access to the nursery school – good idea – however, driving out from it onto the main road, Sir David Rose Avenue, poses a grave danger: At the right corner of Sir David Rose Avenue heading to Kara Kara, Amelia’s Ward is blind; vision is totally obscured by bushes covering an extensive area.

The danger posed here is so obvious that one wonders why this frightening situation is not attracting the attention of the police traffic department.  I don’t remember seeing a speed limit along that area, but there is indeed a need for one between the Kara Kara bus shed and the constabulary compound, which has become a kind of race track. Vehicles coming from the eastern end – Kara Kara – are forever in a speed, and those coming out just can’t see, and even though there is a pedestrian zebra crossing it matters none, since the drivers still cannot see the toddlers or anyone standing behind the bush. But shouldn’t there be a sign asking drivers to slow down at road crossing signs?  Believe me, this is a matter of urgency that should be dealt with pronto!

Editor, having said that, I want to mention another disturbing trend. We Lindeners have definitely carved a name for ourselves like no one else by our mode of protest. We have stood up to what we felt was a callous and unconscionable imposition and were admired; thus we owe it to ourselves not only to exhibit ourselves as big, mighty and bad no-nonsense, but also as decent, disciplined, considerate and respectful to the same degree as which we vent our anger.  Apart from the fact that the Town Council is having the devil’s job in dealing with garbage collection, which seems beyond them, we are not making it any better by our ugly actions; people are still dropping their refuse everywhere – persons after they have finished eating drop their food boxes and drinking cup/bottle in the same spot or fling it away from them. We comment ad nauseam and with admiration about high standards being maintained abroad, commending the Caribbean islands for their strict adherence to an immaculate environment, yet we continue to behave in pigstye fashion – in which case the pig can be excused since that it its nature.

I think it’s time some sort of penalty was applied to awaken people to their senses about having a healthy environment, starting with self. No doubt there is need for receptacles to be placed at various points which are emptied regularly, and not left like those that were installed and forgotten. It is so pleasing to see children taking care of their sweet, chocolate and biscuit wrappers and juice boxes by putting them either in their pockets or haversacks.

Taught at any early age it becomes a part of them – second nature.  We can help create the kind of environment we want; the kind of environment we want to see depends to a great extent on us.  Let us resolve to show that we are not only unique but a balanced, rational and complete set of people.

A word about the D&I work being done in the community: For how long will we continue weeding and cleaning the drains/gutters, heaping the stuff and leaving it on the road; it just doesn’t look or do any good.

This has become very disgusting and irritating: small mounds along the road only to be scattered and return to the drains in a few days or grow higher.  What on earth can the reason be for not having them removed?

And finally, fellow Lindeners, have you noticed those trucks and low-bed vehicles fetching lumber without reflectors? Yet again there was one truckload of lumber being transported untied. Yes Siree, but the traffic department didn’t see.

Yours faithfully,
Frank Fyffe
