Bush Lot rice farmer charged with punching woman after being rebuked

A Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice rice farmer was yesterday charged with assaulting a woman, who has accused him of punching her after she upbraided him about his persistent advances.

Kashim Khan, 33, was placed on $30,000 by Magis-trate Roby Benn, after he denied two charges of assault.

The court heard that around 6:35 pm on September 29, Khan assaulted Chitranie Pitham, 36, called ‘Nado,’ also of Bush Lot, so as to cause her actual bodily harm. Khan was also charged with assaulting Pitham’s husband, Lakeram Jaikarran.

Meanwhile, Jaikarran was also charged with assaulting Khan and he was granted bail in the sum of $10,000. The matters would be called again on November 14.

Attorney Joel Edmond represented Khan at the arraignment and made an application for reasonable bail to be granted. He submitted to the court that his client was a busy person and lived in the area and that he would attend his trial.

The charges stemmed from an attempt by Pitham to put a stop to alleged harassment of her by Khan, which reportedly led to him punching her to the neck, causing her to fall unconscious on the road. She was at the time, in the presence of her husband and her 16-year-old daughter, Chandanie. It is also alleged that Khan raised his hand to hit the teen when Jaikarran got angry and a scuffle ensued between the two men.

Pitham was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where she was treated and sent away.
