Canada-based Rajkumar back to defend title

Canada-based Guyanese golfer Roger Rajkumar has returned to defend his title at the fourth Annual Digicel two-day Golf Classic which tees off today at the Lusignan Golf Course.

Rajkumar arrived in Guyana Wednesday for this weekend’s tournament but his main focus is on securing victory in the premier 2012 Banks DIH sponsored Guyana Open slated for November 4-5 at Lusignan.

Rajkumar was in striking range for championship honours at the prestigious Guyana Open last year but stumbled at the final hurdle in the tournament which was won by Trinidad-based Papo Haniff.

The experienced golfer said he has arrived early to work on his game ahead of the two major tours.

Apart from Rajkumar, four other overseas players Salim Rasheed, Andrew Claxton, Mo Saffie and Prem Ramnauth all from the United States will be in action this weekend.

The local players are also in tremendous form and will pose a serious challenge with the likes of three-time champion Avinesh Persaud, Alfred Mentore, Mohanlall Dinnanauth, Imran Khan, Mike Mangal, Kishan Bacchus, William Walker, Colin Ming and Troy Cadogan being in contention.

Other leading contenders include Robert Hanoman, Patrick Prashad, Ayube Subhan, Fazil Deo, Chatterpaul Deo, David Harry, Munaff Arjune, Mike Guyadin, Lakeram Ramsundar and Sookram Deosarran.

The ladies competition is expected to be a two-player showdown between defending champion Christine Sukhram and Joaan Deo.

Jerome Khan, President of the Lusignan Golf Club said that the course is in immaculate condition so players can anticipate good scores.

Officials of Digicel including Managing Director Gregory Deane and Sponsorship manager Gavin Hope are expected to be at the course to witness the two days of fierce competition.

Tee off is at 09:00 hours on both days.
