Hopkinson’s effort to raise literacy standards through reading is a victim of the new gadgets

Dear Editor,

Two Saturdays ago you reported that the proprietor of Guyana Reading and Research Centre, Mr Hopkinson, had decided to close his educational investment in literacy by which he made available an affordable variety of books for children, adults and schools. That he has been doing so for over 15 years is not only commendable, but patriotic.

Mr Hopkinson has come up against competition in communications which is also experienced globally. The internet which was used mainly for communication, has now been superseded by both smart and dummy phones, not forgetting the latest iPad and talking books. It is a fact that we read less and are more dependent on these new gadgets, eg, kindles, etc, but one cannot escape the fact that reading complements the educated person.

I wish him well in whatever field of activity he decides to pursue and trust that this will be a learning experience.

Yours faithfully,
V O Patrick
