We are in deep crisis

Dear Editor,

The loss of trust in society seems to be producing a generation of thieves and daylight crooks.

Could it get worse? Yes, it will, if we do not collectively halt this process. No-one is immune from the cesspit of corruption and immorality that stalks our land today. No one is safe, except the thieves and crooks – and those in high places.

Some of the negative comments on Demerarawaves concerning a court case further express the low culture and the level to which we have descended as a nation. When a society reaches to a stage when we cannot trust our own relatives and those who are employed to guard the innermost parts of our homes, we are really in a deep crisis.

Dr Faith Harding, a person of immense knowledge of how the human mind works, fully understands the depth of our cultural, social and economic crises and disarray.

Is the PPP government to be blamed for the degradation of our society as well as previous governments? Of course, the government of the day must accept that it is not governing and past ones that they did not govern. This current PPP regime must stand up and take notice.

Editor, I understand your difficulty of balancing freedom of expression and the right to individual and independent thinking, but where do we draw the line? The press and the media in general have a crucial role in shaping society while they must maintain their unique role. But they cannot allow ‘low class‘ derogatory comments against a victim of a serious crime like Dr Faith Harding, so that they become a laughing stock. We cannot promote the ignorant culture of ‘don’t care,‘ regardless of who the victim might be.

Yours faithfully,
Jinnah Rahman
