Man denies misusing money given to buy umbrella

A man was released on self-bail after denying a charge that he took money given to him to buy an umbrella and used it himself.

Clement Tobin initially pleaded guilty to a charge of fraudulent conversion when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in Court 1 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. A not guilty plea was recorded for him after he offered an explanation to the court. The prosecution said that on November 1, Tobin was entrusted with the money to purchase an umbrella for Seekumara Persaud but used the money for his own personal use.

Tobin, however, told the court “she give me $6,400 but I gave her $5,400 ‘cause I lost the $1,000, but she throw down the money twice and I pick it up and gave she it every time.”

Tobin was subsequently released on self bail and the case was adjourned to December 19, when it is to be called for report and fixtures.
