Why are dead animals not removed from the roadways?

Several years ago I wrote a letter about the unpleasant sight of animal carcasses on the road. Then I wrote another one about two years later and my 10-year-old son wrote one also, but it seems our administrators in City Hall and NDCs nationwide are impotent, incompetent, and just do not seem to care.

Our nation is on a thrust for tourism by encouraging foreigners and overseas-based Guyanese to visit Guyana in order to help in our nation’s development.

But with such immaturity and wanton carelessness, how can we show the world that we are ready for tourism and development?

The dead animals in various parts of Georgetown and in the NDC areas send a message that the authorities lack style and character; that they just do not care or give a damn.

I have seen animals killed on the road in front of businesses of prominence on the East Coast of Demerara as well as other areas, which are just left there in front of their stores or restaurants, without a care about the deleterious effects these would have on children, tourists and other citizens.

To some locals it may not matter. Can they not pay someone a few dollars to just bury the animals somewhere?

Today, on Saturday, December 8, at 9am by the Ogle double bridge going west, I saw dead animals impeding traffic, and of course producing a pungent aroma.  Unless some patriotic Guyanese or caring citizen of the area does something, I expect that the carcasses will be left there. Amazingly, NDC’s and City Hall do not operate on weekends and holidays, so nothing will be done.

I hope the Ministers of Tourism, the Environment and Local Government are reading this letter with concern.

Yours faithfully,
Roshan Khan
