No. 4 Village residents angry over blocked drain

Residents of No. 4 Village, West Coast Berbice are peeved that a businessman in the area has blocked a drain in front of a dam to access a burial ground from where he is removing dirt.

They said the dam was not being used often, so an opening was left to drain the water. They had also asked the regional authorities to provide a tube so that the dam could have been properly built.

According to the residents, the authorities promised to come but before they could have done so, the businessman dug dirt from another dam nearby and used that to cover the drain and built up the front part of the dam.

They are worried that “if a heavy rain comes now, the entire area would flood because the water has nowhere to go…. We were getting natural flow here. He just can’t come in here and do what he feels like.”

Besides, they said, he was not supposed to remove dirt from the burial ground but he did so for three days. They called on the authorities to investigate.
