Malta Chess tournament today in Bartica

A one-day rapid chess tournament will take place today in Bartica as the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) moves to decentralize the sport.

The tournament will be held at the Bartica Secondary School, Seventh Avenue and will commence immediately following registration which will take place at 9am.

The tournament will be a seven round Swiss system affair for juniors and seniors.

Registration fee is $500 each for adults and $200 each for children.

The tournament is being sponsored by Banks DIH Limited whose Brand Manager for non-alcoholic malts Clayton Mc Kenzie, last week presented a cheque to secretary of the GCF, Vishnu Rampersaud at the company’s Thirst Park complex.

Banks DIH Communications Manager, Troy Peters, said that his company continues to support the GCF in its efforts to de-centralize the game locally.

“Banks DIH has been established in Bartica for many years and we take this opportunity to welcome the chess players and officials to the riverain community. We expect a highly competitive tournament under the Malta Supreme brand. Malta Supreme and the federation are working closely in the development of chess locally and we urge members of that community to compete and support the players who will be in action,” he concluded.

Rampersaud expressed gratitude to the company for supporting chess as the federation continues to spread the noble pastime by way of competition and the distribution of chess material. Trophies, medals and chess sets would be awarded to prizewinners. Over a dozen sets would be distributed.
