Deo laments paucity of female golfers for Digicel Open

Top female golfer Joaan Deo is lamenting the fact there might only be two female players participating this week-end at the Digicel Golf Classic at the Lusignan Golf Club.

According to Deom she is disappointed that there are not other female golfers besides herself and Christine Sukhram competing in this week-end’s tournament.

The two-day event starts on Saturday.

Deo, a student at the University of Guyana where she is pursuing studies in medicine, said she does not expect this weekend to be a very competitive one between herself and Sukhram.

“I don’t know how they are organizing it this year but last year we had different jackets for males and females and if that is the case this year, it will not be competitive. But if we are all just playing for the one jacket then that would be very competitive.”

Rita Heikens, wife of the former European Commissioner and Melissa Humphrey are no longer competing.

Heikens has left the country while Humphrey, said Deo, hardly comes to the course anymore.

“Some players from Suriname usually come for the Guyana Open but we don’t know if they will be here for Digicel as we have not heard from them as yet.”

Last year, said Deo female players  from French Guiana and Suriname participated leading to a very competitive competition among the females something she is longing for this year again.

Deo, however, said if they do not get any word from Suriname by tomorrow then that could mean that they will not be here for the classics.

Asked about preparation, Deo said because of her studies she no longer practices as often as before but added that  she will try her best to put in as much work as possible before Saturday.

Chipping and putting, Deo said are the most important things and that is what she focuses on whenever she is afforded the time to practice.

“If I have time to go in the afternoon and chip and putt for an hour or two I think that is good enough for me.”
