National footballer dies after accident

A national football player succumbed in hospital on Saturday to internal injuries sustained in an accident that left him in a coma for 11 days.

Dead is Colin Edwards, 21, of Lot 14 Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, who was a member of the national team, the Golden Jaguars, for which he played as goalkeeper.

His mother, Dawn Edwards, was unable say what transpired at the time of the accident but related that her son left home about 7 pm on February 5 to go and purchase bread at a nearby shop.

“He came home back and said that he was heading to the Fruta Conquerors ground (Guyhoc) and then go and buy two more bread; then to his brother in Bent Street,” Edwards said.

She added that his brother waited for a while but there was no sign of Edwards. He later learned that he was involved in an accident, where two women were struck down by a motorcyclist, said to be Edwards, as they were attempting to cross the road at Louisa Row.

Edwards had been a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since then. One of the injured women, Phyllis Luckie, remains a patient in the ICU.

Edwards was described as a loving person who went the extra mile for persons in need. He was also at the time in training to become a member of the Alpha United football club, for which he was scheduled to play his first game on the day after the accident.
