GDF major accused of rape

A Guyanese-born Canadian is alleging that she was raped by a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) major early on Valentine’s Day, after she went out with him.

The incident allegedly took place at a guest house on the East Bank Demerara, after the woman went to see the accused, who had been her friend for the past 12 years. The GDF major allegedly had forced anal sex with the woman, after she consented to having vaginal sex with him.

The woman, 35, stated that the officer has denied such allegations in the presence of his lawyers and her during a confrontation at the Brickdam Police Station. Instead, the man claimed that he had consensual sex with the woman. The matter is currently being investigated by the police but efforts to make contact with the GDF for a comment were futile.

Recounting what transpired to this newspaper, the woman said she came to Guyana and decided to visit the accused who was her friend. She said she went to his place of work and he indicated to her that he would take her somewhere.

The woman stated that on their way to the hotel, the man told her, “you don’t know me” and “I am a wicked man,” but she added that she was not alarmed by his comments because she trusted him.

On their arrival at the hotel, the accused asked her who would be paying the hotel bill, she said, and she ended up paying. Once in the room, the woman recounted, she and the officer began talking and she consented to intimacy with him. The relationship was one of friendship prior to then, she said.

She also said that after she consented to sex, the man asked her what her limits were and she told him that she did not engage in anal sex.

However, she said, the man proceeded to forcibly sodomise with her.

During the ordeal, she said, she screamed and begged him to stop but he paid her no heed. After he was finished, she said, the officer told her to go take a shower and he left her in the hotel and returned to his place of work.

The woman said she is seeking justice. She said she wants him to be charged before her three weeks’ vacation is up in Guyana, and she would return to proceed with the matter.
