‘Government Men’

Dear Editor,

Permit me to share some quick thoughts on a few items that were found interesting.

I saw that notice from the Integrity Com-mission regarding declaration of assets.  I wondered if such declaration should include property (most likely properties) erected with funds that were not part of any official compensation package.  The same thought extended to overseas bank accounts, and holdings in offshore havens.  Just checking to ascertain how “full” is full disclosure.

Then, there was something that came up in my recent readings.  Australia’s convict beginnings are well known, but I stumbled upon this gem: It was improper to call one of the transported “convict.”  The rather delicious term of choice back then was “Government Man.”  I think that that was most considerate.  Further, I think the substitution of “Government Man” in the place of “convict” would be most appropriate here in Guyana.  I see the two as seamlessly interchangeable, fitting all the required conditions, and applicable almost all the time.

Next, the great Clive Lloyd had to learn the hard way.  This is the taint and rejection that comes from associating with – Government Men.

Rather surprisingly, I see the government has gained a host of followers.  Nowadays, it is not the only group constantly urinating on the peoples of this nation; there are citizens who engage in this gardening practice all over the city.  Sometimes I ask myself if they waited for me to pass by.  There was one man relieving himself in broad daylight from the bridge at Camp Street and South Road into the canal below.  There was another fellow using the fence of the Brickdam Cathedral for a chamber pot.  There was another chap by… okay, enough!  Might be a case of weak bladders. Or citizens imitating the actions of the political masters. Or rebels embracing a new form of protest through such public juggling.

If it is the latter, I suggest two prime locations that are more appropriate.  The first is obliquely across from where the old Metropole used to be and the other is on New Garden Street.

Yours faithfully,
GHK Lall
