Wisburg teacher fractures skull in trap set by students

Teachers of the Wisburg Secondary School in Region Ten are afraid to enter their classrooms after one of them walked into a trap set by students that left her with a fractured skull.

The injured teacher, Michelle Richards, 25, was rushed to the Mackenzie Hospital on February 4, after a table top landed on her head as she entered a classroom to teach Fourth Form students.

As a result of similar attacks recently, teachers are now refusing to enter classrooms.

Rawle Johnson told Stabroek News yesterday that his wife suffered injuries to her head, shoulder and right arm and she is now experiencing severe headaches and vomiting.

He added that Richards had a CT-scan done and it revealed that she sustained a fractured skull due to the impact.

Johnson noted that he went to the school and was told by the headmistress that three students were responsible for setting the trap. He said he made a report to the Wismar Police Station and is awaiting word on the outcome of the investigation.

Meanwhile, Colleen Stevens, another teacher at the school, suggested that Richards was deliberately targeted by the students.

She noted that one week after Richards was injured, a student of the same class warned another teacher that if she entered the class it was at her own risk because “she was next on the list.”

She said that on Tuesday, a similar trap to the one that Johnson set off was set by another Fourth Form class but its intended victim was alerted to the table top being above the door.

Stevens said that since the incidents, teachers have refused to teach classes out of fear for their safety.

Stevens said that the teachers of Wisburg Secondary have not yet been told about what should be their next move and she added that a strike is imminent if nothing is done to address the situation.
