UDFA Elections now set for March 14

The Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) will now hold its elections on March 14th, one day before associations are required to submit their nominations for the GFF Presidency.

In a letter sent to the media, UDFA Secretary Cindy Saigon said the body sought and was granted approval by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) to postpone its elections from February 28 to March 14.

The elections, according to the letter, will be held in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council, Region 10.

Members are also asked to submit motions or questions they would like addressed at the Annual General Meeting no later than March 6.

The postponement, according to incumbent Sharma Solomon, has to do with the association wishing to have everything in place before going to elections. This, he said, was necessary if they are going to prevent the GFF from finding any clause to rule that the electoral process is null and void.

Meanwhile, the postponement of the elections did not sit well with one of the candidates Jermaine Figueira who, when reached for a comment said:“I don’t know why Mr. Solomon is playing politics with the business of football in the region by blatantly derailing the electoral process of the elections.

His puerile and vacuous excuses are not substantive for the importance of the election which is imperative to the association’s path to development. Mr. Solomon’s action is testimony to the sentiments being expressed by many among the football populace and sports enthusiast, that his bid for the presidency is not prudent thing for his responsibilities as Regional Chairman is enormous and moreover his constant battle with the government would make the business of the UDFA his secondary business.”

Ten clubs will be contesting the elections and they are: Amelia’s Ward United, Milerock, Winner Connection, Vasco, Net Rockers, Eagles United, Botofago, Blueberry Hill United, BakewellTopp XX and Silver Shattas.
