Accused in Melanie murder freed

Nolan Roberts, accused of fatally stabbing another man at Melanie, East Coast Demerara in 2004, was yesterday freed after a no-case submission made by his attorney was upheld by Justice Roxane George in the High Court.

Justice George upheld the no-case application that was made by attorney Jorawar Misir, and then asked the 12-member jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty.

Roberts was then discharged by Justice George.
Roberts was on trial for the murder of Andrew Walters, which occurred on April 6, 2004 at Melanie, East Coast Demerara. He had allegedly stabbed Walters to death.

Natasha Backer and Rhondel Weever represented the state.
Backer and Weever had presented as a witness Police Sergeant Denaise Adams, who told the court that the accused gave him an oral statement on what transpired between him and Walters. This oral statement was admitted as evidence in the trial.

Adams had said that Roberts had told him that he and Walters had a problem and Walters lashed him. Adams added that Roberts said that he ran away after Walters hit him but Walters followed him.

According to Adams, Roberts told him that Walters fell down and he saw an ice pick fall out of his hands. He then picked up the ice pick and “fire two juk at he and me run and go home.”
