The people sworn to serve and protect us break the laws

Dear Editor,

The people who were sworn to serve and protect us, uphold and reinforce the Laws of Guyana, continue to break those same laws religiously. The policemen and women who continue to abuse the use of their uniforms and police vehicles are beyond comprehension. Driving up one-ways,  stopping anywhere blocking traffic to chat, the use of cellphones while driving, using any lanes at the traffic lights, transporting personal friends and relatives in police vehicles, the abuse of sirens when there is no emergency or absolute need, the haughty and disrespectful manner when addressing the general public, the blatant asking for money, the ignorance of not listening properly to what a civilian may have to say, are some of the many everyday embarrassing displays that the general public have come to accept as the normal behaviour of the police force.

Having said that, are we still supposed to show respect for them? Could we submit vehicle numbers, rank numbers and photos to a specific department to investigate these many malpractices? I think too many men and women are joining the police force for the wrong reasons.

Yours faithfully,
Laurence Fung
