Clerk charged in $15M post office theft

A clerk who was fingered in a multi-million-dollar theft at the Mahdia Post Office was on Thursday released on $650,000 bail, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that between March 1 and March 9, Oswald Whyte, 36, of Linden, who was a clerk at the post office, stole $15, 737, 970, which was the property of the Georgetown Post Office. He was not required to plea to the indictable charge.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick told the court that the money was discovered missing when an audit was done and the clerk was unable to account for it.

Bostwick did not object to bail being granted, however, he requested that Whyte lodge all his travel documents with the police and report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Friday at 8am.

The court granted bail and with the conditions requested by the prosecutor.

Whyte was ordered to appear in the Mahdia Magistrates’ Court on April 17, when the matter continues.
