Doctor fined $80,000 for assault

A medical doctor was on Thursday fined $80,000 with an alternative of two months imprisonment for assaulting a man.

Roopan Singh pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Singh admitted that on March 10, at Alexander Village, he unlawfully assaulted Rizmond Mohammed.

Mohammed told the court the doctor threatened to kill him and chucked him out of his office.

Singh’s attorney, Khemraj Ramjattan, told the court that his client was trying to get Mohammed out of his office, but he refused. Ramjattan added that Singh held Mohammed and removed him and Mohammed allegedly responded by using a series of expletives.
