Teacher gets 58 months jail for armed robbery

Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday sentenced a teacher to 58 months jail after he was found guilty of robbery under arms when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Calvin Sergeant, 24, of 41 D’Urban Street, Wortmanville who appeared unrepresented in court, said he would like to appeal the matter. He also told the court that he has no antecedents.

Sergeant was also charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition; however this matter was transferred to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry’s court for April 17. The matter was prosecuted by Lance Corporal Renetta Bentham.

Sergeant was charged with a robbery committed on Floyd Rawlins on August 15, 2012 at Meadow Brook Gardens, in which he, together with others, robbed Rawlins of a gold chain valued $200,000 using a gun.

The man first appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on August 17, 2012, who heard that the accused was positively identified by the victim, who chased him down in his car.

Sergeant, said to be a Physics and Chemistry teacher, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery under arms when it was read to him in that court. It was also alleged that on the same day he had in his possession a .38 revolver and five live rounds of .38 ammunition, without licence. To these latter two charges, Sergeant pleaded not guilty.
