Ganja farmer jailed for three years

A father of six was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $5,000 after he admitted to cultivating marijuana, when he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.

Roland Hosea, 31, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on March 21, at Kumani Creek, he cultivated cannabis.

Hosea asked the court to be lenient with him since he has six children and a wife. He said he started planting the illegal substance as a means of providing for his family.

Pleading desperately with the magistrate, Hosea further told her that he has a one-year-old child who has a heart problem. He said this was the first time he had planted marijuana.

The magistrate asked Hosea if had ever been charged before and he replied “yes,” and explained that he had been charged with larceny.

He was then asked by the magistrate why he had chosen planting cannabis as means of providing for his family. He did not respond.

He was subsequently sentenced.
