Industry man dies after suspected hit-and-run at Turkeyen

An accident on the Turkeyen Public Road, near to the Liliendaal pump station, on Wednesday has left one man dead.

Dead is Ian Chaves, 43, of Lot 9 Crown Dam, Industry and a former employee of Hand-in-Hand Mutual. His wife Khaneza said that she got the call at around 12 pm while she was cooking and the caller who identified herself only as, ‘Amanda’ told her to come down to the public hospital.

She told Stabroek News that when she arrived at the hospital her husband was in a bad state and unconscious. Both of his arms and legs were broken and there were lacerations all over his body. The doctors tried to revive him she said, but he had a punctured lung and severe internal bleeding and he eventually succumbed.

She said that he was on his way home after having left to go to Albert Street to do part time work. She said that he normally uses the ‘line-top’ to go home and found it strange that he took the public road that day.

Amanda had relayed to her that she and her family were heading to Georgetown when they noticed a body lying on the ground. They stopped to render assistance and that was when they noticed a black Noah vehicle parked a couple of yards from the body.

This particular vehicle was just parked she said and did not even offer any sort of assistance. The vehicle drove away before they got a chance to take down the licence plate number.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ivelaw Whittaker, when contacted on Thursday told SN that the investigators are still trying to determine if the man was indeed a victim of a hit and run. He said that no debris was found on the road to indicate that there was a collision and there was no damage on the motorcycle to indicate that it was hit by something. Based on what investigators were told the man was found lying on roadway with bike nearby. A post-mortem examination is to be done.

Chaves leaves to mourn his daughter, Debra Chaves and wife, Khaneza.
