Still no arrests over Meten-Meer-Zorg accident

Three weeks on, there have been no arrests in connection with the accident at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara involving siblings Shane and Tulsidai Prahlad, and which claimed Shane’s life.

Seventeen-year-old Shane Prahlad took his last breath on April 24 and was laid to rest on April 28. He died as a result of a fractured skull, head injuries, haemorrhaging and a fractured spine his post-mortem examination revealed.

His sister Tulsidai, 25, is still in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Hospital and is suffering from similar injuries her mother, Geeta Roberts, said yesterday. The Prahlads are from Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

Roberts said that although her daughter was still in an unconscious state, she was responsive and showing signs of improvement since the accident, which occurred on April 15. Relatives of the victims said that they are still trying to understand how the accident occurred.

A source had told this newspaper that the accident had occurred sometime after 12 am when the vehicle the siblings were travelling in collided with a car. But Roberts said that she has since learnt that her children were hit from behind by another car.

Roberts said that the driver of that car was identified but no arrest has been made by the police, even though her son had died. She also stated that she has learnt that the accused is a known character.

Speaking with Stabroek News yesterday, Roberts said the family is still trying to come to terms with what has happened and the passing of her son, who was her last child and was described as her baby.

She said her daughter is an American citizen and had returned to Guyana shortly before the accident with her father, who passed away about two weeks before the tragedy. Tulsidai’s husband is also an American and her mother said that he too is trying to deal with the unfortunate incident.

The woman said she knew that nothing can be done to bring her son back to life. And when asked if she was not seeking justice for her children, said, “God will do everything. I’m not taking justice into my own hands.”
