Simon topples Jairam in draughts final

Carlton Simon, on Sunday defeated Guyana Draughts Association president Jairam in the final of the GDA two-day national draughts championships at the National Gymnasium.

Simon ended with 32 points to edge Jairam who ended on 31 points in the `A’ division of the competition.

Linden’s Floyd Cumberbatch also ended on 31 points but after two consecutive ties, Cumberbatch quit leaving Jiaram in sole possession of second place.

Cumberbatch ended third.

Current champion, Khemraj Pooranmall ended in fourth place with 29 points.

On Saturday, Jiaram, who chalked up 18 points, defended his `B’ Class title earning promotion to the ‘A’ class.

The second place went to the West Bank Demerara veteran, Haroon Bacchus who gained 14 points while newly appointed ‘B’ class player Shawn Weekes and first time competitor Patrick Balram from East Coast Demerara were tied with 13 points each.

However, Balram failed to turn up for the tie breaker, leaving Weekes to claim the third place prize. Trophies were donated by Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.

The next tournament will be played on the 100-square board sometime this month.
