No bail for accused jewels thief

Eighteen-year-old mason Lasell Duke was on Wednesday remanded to prison by Magistrate Fabayo Azore for allegedly robbing a girl of her jewellery using violence.

Duke, of 59 D’Urban Street, was alleged to have been in the company of others on July 7 when he pounced on Lashanna McCurdy and relieved her of her $42,000 gold chain and $38,000 earrings, while using personal violence against her.

The man denied the charge when it was read to him in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The complainant was not present at Wednesday’s hearing.

Prosecutor Burgett Grant objected to bail on the grounds of the nature and prevalence of the offence. The magistrate then announced that bail was refused and Duke was remanded to prison until the continuation of the matter on July 24.
