Tuschen girl wins finger spelling bee

Asiyah Mohammed, the winner of the finger spelling bee competition sponsored by Courts, was yesterday presented with a cheque of $320,000 which will go towards the Deaf Association of Guyana.

The competition, which was coordinated by the Deaf Association of Guyana in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, saw participants from the New Amsterdam Special School, David Rose Special School and the Tuschen Deaf Academy.

Mohammed, who is a deaf mute, through an interpreter articulated that the competition was quite tough but she worked tirelessly which included waking up early to practice for the competition. She added that her teacher, James Williams of the Tuschen Deaf Academy helped her to excel in the competition. She hopes that other people with this disability would be able to strive in fields where it can be fully utilised.

Sabine McIntosh, President of the Guyana Deaf Association stated that she was very grateful to Courts for sponsoring of the competition. She revealed that also with the help of Courts a workshop was held this year which saw five schools prepare the children for the finger spelling bee. She added that the competition helped to unleash the potential of the children.

The competition which was recorded will air on NCN at the end of the month and will be rebroadcast on The Learning Channel.
