Man admits hitting sister with scrubbing board for “handling” mother

A man, who hit his sister across her back with a scrubbing board because he was angered by the way she was treating their mother, was on Thursday ordered to be on good behaviour for the next 12 months or go to jail.

The 25-year-old man was discharged after his sister indicated she no longer wants to go ahead with the matter, but Magistrate Ann McLennan placed him on a bond to keep the peace.

The man, who at first denied the allegation when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, said that the incident occurred after he came home from work and heard his sister “handling” his mother, which prompted him to give her “two lashes” with the board.

The court heard from Prosecutor Bharat Mangru that on the day in question, the siblings had an argument, after which the man went up behind his sister and dealt her a lash to her back with the scrubbing board.

But the magistrate dismissed the matter after the girl told the court she no longer wished to offer evidence against him.

When the magistrate inquired what happened to her back, the visibly-shy girl responded with a nod and said “nothing.”

Before discharging the man, the magistrate cautioned him to “learn how to use his hands” or he would find himself in trouble and the next time it would not be that easy.
