Police track and field championship starts Sunday

One of the sporting fraternity’s most eagerly anticipated athletics competitions, the Guyana Police Force Inter-Division Track and Field Championship will start on Sunday with the road relay race.

The competition is expected to feature top class sprinters such as Alita Moore, Shawn Semple, Leota Babb and Keith Roberts and will run from Sunday to Friday.

This year, K&B Mining and Hardware Supplies has again thrown its support behind the 59th edition of the competition. Accountant Seeta Husain speaking on behalf of company CEO Hema Persaud said the donation was being made as part of its corporate obligation to participate in social development.

“We are pleased to support this competition. We believe that it’s part of our right to help develop certain aspects of society. This is not the only event we have supported and will continue to give our support once we are satisfied that the gesture is right,” Husain said.

Police Sports Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Colin Boyce said he was pleased that K&B Mining had decided to continue to sponsor one of the most prestigious meets on the annual athletics calendar.

“On behalf of the Guyana Police Force, I am extremely grateful for your unyielding support of the Police Athletics Championships. With your contribution, the Police Force has continued to churn out champions that have gone on to make Guyana proud,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force is celebrating its 174th Anniversary and 59 years since the existence of the athletics meet. The first event for the competition is the 10km mixed road relay.

The heats of the annual competition which has an ‘A’ and ‘B’ category will follow after the road race with the grand finale set for Friday.

In the ‘A’ Class competition, Guyana will take on its Caribbean counterparts while the ‘B’ Class contest features local athletes competing from the various divisions.
