Teens accused of stealing food during Kwakwani hostel break-in

A juvenile was among two teens yesterday accused of breaking into the Kwakwani Student Hostel and stealing food items.

The allegation against Lancelot Captain, 18, and a 16-year-old juvenile is that between July 17 and July 18, at Kwakwani, Upper Berbice River, they broke and entered the student hostel.

The jointly-charged-duo is alleged to have stolen from the hostel two whole plucked chickens, two large bottles of Ovaltine, three tins of Milo, two packets of sausage, 10 pounds of milk and other items, all totalling $29,000 in value and property of the Ministry of Education.

The teens pleaded not guilty to the charge of break-and-enter-and-larceny when it was read to them by Magistrate Fabayo Azore before whom they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Captain’s occupation is a porter and he resides at Kwakwani Park, Upper Berbice River.

The proceedings were held in-camera (to the exclusion of the public) since one of the two defendants is 16 years of age—a juvenile.

The young men were both represented by attorneys who were successful in retaining their clients’ pre-trial liberty to which the prosecution had no objection.

They were each granted $20,000 bail and their matter was transferred to the Kwakwani Magistrates’ Court for August, 16.
