Guyana squash teams sweep aside competition

Guyana swept Jamaica 5-0 in their female team playoffs and the men drubbed Barbados 4-1 as action in the Digicel 2013 Senior Caribbean Squash Championships continued at the Georgetown Club Squash Courts yesterday.

Nicolette Fernandes disposed of Melissa Lue-Yen in straight sets 11-1, 11-8, 11-1. Guyana would take a 3-0 lead as Ashley Khalil crushed Brooke Burrowes 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 and Mary Fung-A-Fat pummelled Tracie Binnie 11-5, 11-4, 11-3.

In the final two encounters, Ashley De Groot beat Nathalie Boreland 11-3, 11-1, 11-4 while Keisha Jeffrey earned a walk over victory to complete the sweep.

On the male side, Guyana downed Barbados 4-1. Richard Chin overcame Gavin Cumberbatch in the opening round 5-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-8. Alexander Arjoon would double the local side’s lead as he defeated Shawn Simpson 3-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-2.

Barbados would cut the deficit to one as Bryant Cumberbatch crushed Kristian Jeffrey in straight sets 11-9, 11-4, 11-3.

Jamal Callender would however restore Guyana’s two-game lead as he downed Rhett Cumberbatch 12-10, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7. Jason Ray Khalil would conclude the encounter as he battered Stewart St. John in straight sets 11-3, 11-3, 11-5.

Continuing in the division, Jamaica would defeat Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in their matchup. Men’s singles champion Chris Binnie would give Jamaica the early lead as he defeated Kale Wilson 11-7, 11-4, 13-11.

Jamaica would take a commanding 3-0 lead as Bruce Burrows disposed of Don Lee 11-8, 11-4, 11-2 and Dane Schwier edged Mandela Patrick- 15-13, 11-7, 14-16, 9-11, 11-7 respectively.

However Trinidad and Tobago would win the final two encounters as Paul de Verteuil came from behind to defeat Julian Morrison 7-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 and Nku Patrick swept Bruce Levy 11-6, 12-10, 11-9.

In the final male team playoff of the day, Cayman Islands defeated Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) 4-1. Mark Chaloner crushed Jules Snagg in straight sets 11-4, 11-3, 11-4 to give Cayman Islands the early advantage.

Cameron Stafford increased the Cayman Islands lead as he swept Kevin Hannaway 11-7, 11-9, 12-10.  Kevin Bailey would pull one back for OECS as he defeated Gabriel Rabess 11-3, 11-8, 4-11, 11-4.

Cayman Islands would however win the final two matches Julian Jervis thumped Jason Doyle 11-8, 12-10, 11-5 and Daniel Murphy defeated Dion Anselm 11-8, 5-11, 11-2, and 11-6.

In the veterans division, Guyana edged Barbados 3-2. Garfield Wiltshire overcame Mark Sealy 9-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-1, 11-9 to give Guyana the lead.

Barbados would quickly respond and take a 2-1 lead as Lynn DeCambra-McLeod defeated Chauncey Lee 11-0, 11-5, 11-4 and Leon Truss defeated Dennis Dias 6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.

Guyana would win the final two matches as Brendon Mounter beat Nigel Griffith 11-7, 11-8, 11-2 and Jillian Lilico beat Ayoni Bradshaw 11-7, 11-6, 11-1.

In an earlier matchup, Barbados defeated Trinidad and Tobago 4-1 in their veteran’s divisional fixture.
Mark Sealy defeated Peter Pirtheesingh 11-3, 4-11, 12-10- 11-0 in their Over 40 male match while Nigel Griffith defeated John Holley in their over 50 match 11-5, 13-11. 8-11, 11-8 to give Barbados a 2-0 lead.
Trinidad and Tobago would pull one back through Richard Hart who defeated Leon Truss 11-6, 11-2, 11-4 in their Over 60 male fixture.

Barbados would win the final two games as Ayoni Bradshaw and Lynne DeCambra-McLeod would register walkover victories in the over 40 and over 50 female fixtures respectively.
