Couple, juvenile accused of obstructing justice

A couple and a teenager were yesterday charged with obstructing justice by preventing a man from attending court.

Anita Mearns, 55, her common-law husband Clement Persaud, 58, both of Lot 43 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, and a 15-year-old girl were jointly accused of attempted to pervert the course of justice by knowingly and wilfully preventing Edward Samaroo from attending court, between July 1 and July 31, 2013.

They pleaded not guilty when they appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence, the penalty it attracts and his fear that the defendants may not return for trial if released from custody.

However, Magistrate Azore set bail at $50,000 for each accused and adjourned the case to September 16.
