Policeman Kevin Bruster was yesterday charged with sexually assaulting a young woman who is believed to have been trafficked into the interior.
The charge stated that Bruster, 21, of Lot 202 Coldingen, East Coast, Demerara, on May 15, at 14 Miles Issano, Region Seven, engaged in sexual penetration of the 26-year-old woman.
Shopkeeper Sequila Glynn, 41, of Fourth Avenue, Caneville, East Bank Demerara, was last week charged with transporting the woman to Issano, Region Seven, for the purpose of exploiting her into prostitution.
Bruster was not required to plead to the charge when it was read at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Stabroek News understands that the police’s case is that Bruster was stationed at the Sherima Police Outpost at 14 Miles Issano, when he allegedly had sexual relations with the woman against her will.
A report was made by the woman and Bruster was later charged after investigations. Attorney Latchmi Rahamat, who appeared for Bruster, said that at all times he has denied the allegations against him.
She added that there were other persons at the police station when the woman visited that station to be registered in the area.
She added that when Bruster was finished with his duties, he and everyone else left the station and witnesses can testify to this fact.
Rahamat, who said the man has been a police officer for the past three years, asked for reasonable bail to be granted.
Prosecutor Oswald Pitt objected to bail. Magistrate Faith McGusty, who presided over the arraignment, granted bail in the sum of $200,000 and ordered that Bruster report to the Criminal Investigation Department once every two weeks until completion of the case.
The matter returns to court on September 3, when it is fixed to be heard at Court One.
