NIS clerk arrested after ‘fishy’ story over $2M robbery

A young clerk employed with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) office in Lethem was on Thursday arrested by the police after it is believed that she faked a robbery to hide the fact that she may have embezzled $2 million.

According to reports, her action may have been prompted by the presence of the auditors at the office at the moment.

Residents told Stabroek News that the woman reportedly injured herself by cutting several places on her hands and then sought treatment at the Lethem Hospital, where she related that she was robbed early Thursday morning while on her way to the office. Officials at the hospital contacted the police, who subsequently arrested the woman after her story sounded fishy.

“What would she be doing with $2 million early in the morning and where will she be going with it? NIS is not a bank,” one resident commented.

The resident also pointed out that at the time the woman claimed she was robbed, other workers would have been on their way to their respective places of employment and no one reported witnessing the alleged crime. Residents revealed that the young woman would leave Lethem often on the weekend and travel to the city and it is believed that she removed the money over a period of time.

Police are investigating.
