Randolph Pereira, who was accused of escaping from the East La Penitence Police Station in August last year, was on Thursday sentenced to six months imprisonment after being found guilty of the offence.
Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, who presided over Pereira’s trial at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, handed down the sentence to the unrepresented man at its conclusion.
On June 18, the magistrate had told Pereira that the court had found that there was sufficient evidence to have made out a prima facie case against him. He was then further informed that he could lead his defence, which he did on Thursday after calling his witnesses.
The charge against Pereira was that on August 17, 2012 at the East La Penitence Police Station, while being in custody of police corporal 12224 Patrick Sears, pending investigation into an alleged rape, he escaped from custody.
