Pot smoker fined, ordered to do community service

A young woman was yesterday fined and ordered to do two months’ community service after she confessed that she “smokes pot”.

Elizabeth Ramnarayn, 33, of Lot 306 Independence Boulevard, Albouystown appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore charged with the possession of narcotics. She pleaded guilty. The court heard that on September 17, around 03:00 hrs Ramnarayn was driving motor car PPP 6505 south along High Street. She was stopped by the police and a search was conducted of her vehicle. A Ziploc bag containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found. She was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police station where the illicit drug was weighed and found to be 1 ½ grammes.

Before handing down sentence, Magistrate Azore asked Ramnarayn if she would like to say anything. She admitted she used the illicit drug occasionally and pleaded for leniency.
She was fined $5,000 and ordered to do two months’ community service.
