I refer to PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee’s letter, ‘Exposing Bisram’s deep-seated ignorance,’ published in the Guyana Chronicle, on January 4.
In his missive, Mr Rohee claims that, contrary to views expressed by Mr Bisram, the PPP/C has not abandoned its traditional support base; it remains a mass-based party and stands an excellent chance of being re-elected. I beg to differ.
The PPP/C no longer has any mass support. The mismanagement of GuySuCo, flooding of Guyana’s East Indian communities on the East Coast, and unbearable tolls on the Berbice River bridge have revealed the true colours of the PPP/C. They have no concern for their traditional supporters; they care only about enriching themselves and their friends.
The welfare of cane-cutters is of no interest to the members of the ruling elite. The evidence shows that the only beneficiaries of the ruling regime are those who can afford to build mansions in Pradoville and Tuschen. If you do not have friends in Freedom House, you suck salt!
General Secretary Rohee claims that the PPP/C is not at all arrogant. Well, how does he characterise a man being locked up for expressing his view in Parika? Is not the silencing of Mr Christopher Ram at a public meeting by President Jagdeo the very height of arrogance?
Mr Rohee refers to the PPP ideology. Would he clarify what that ideology is? Is he referring to the Marxist, communist ideology for which the PPP is famous, or is he talking about some other ideology?
If the PPP/C believes that it still has any mass support, it is sadly mistaken. The mass support evaporated with GuySuCo’s profits and dried up with the Amaila waterfall.
