Ends more important then means

Dear Editor,

A prominent New York based newspaper has reported that the “Guyanese authorities” had concerns and were curious about the United States government’s grant to strengthen democracy at the local and grassroots level in Guyana.

Those concerns and questions might have justification, but they are wrapped up in ‘means.’ I, and I am certain the broader mass of Guyanese living inside and outside Guyana, are more absorbed with the ends; that is, trained and more efficient local government administrators who can get them their jobs done, especially in terms of dealing with flooded streets after rainfall, regular garbage pick-ups, and working municipalities.

The Guyanese authorities are (reportedly) suspicious about the motive behind the offer of the US$1.5 million grant.

But while debates continue between the United States Ambassador, Brent Hardt, and Guyana government representatives, I am forced to reiterate that in this case, the ends are certainly more important than the means.

 Yours faithfully,

Morris Wilson
