A large withdrawal from a bank should be in the form of a cheque

Dear Editor,

About two weeks ago the wife of an acquaintance of mine was robbed of two million dollars after she had withdrawn the money from a bank. She was stuck up by a young man with a gun while his accomplice waited a short distance away on a motorbike.

I am not sure if anyone witnessed this as it was during the mid-morning. No report was made to the police as the victim believed it would be a waste of time. A report was made to someone in authority at the bank. It is not clear what investigation would have been carried out internally.

I would like to alert people who are withdrawing large sums of money from a bank do so with a cheque.

Years ago, while I was in the GNCB in Cornhill Street, I noticed a staff member pointing out someone to somebody in the bank. It was done in a very sly manner, and she continued doing her work without paying further attention. The bank was crowded at that time and it was long after that it dawned upon me as to the main reason why the staff member might have pointed out someone in such a careless manner.

I do hope that this quiet episode will be fully investigated and the police contacted.

Yours faithfully,
