Jamaican fined for overstaying

A Jamaican national who admitted that he had overstayed his welcome in Guyana was fined and ordered to immediately return to his country when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.

Rohan Brown had been staying in Guyana since September 6, 2013 at his girlfriend’s Lot 232 Thomas Street, Kitty home. According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, Brown, 27, had been granted a six-month stay in Guyana, which was due to expire on March 6, 2014.

On March 12, Jones said, ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) were conducting an exercise and searched a home in Thomas Street, Kitty. The ranks contacted the defendant and asked him to present his relevant documents. Upon inspection, it was revealed that he had overstayed his designated time by six days. He was subsequently arrested.

According to the man’s lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat, Brown had had intentions of returning to Jamaica but the money to purchase his ticket had gotten tied up. He noted that Brown’s girlfriend, who worked within the Ministry of Health, was two and a half months pregnant with his child.

Fung-a-Fat also requested Brown’s immediate deportation from Guyana.

When questioned about how soon he would be able to leave the country, the Jamaican’s girlfriend stood up and informed Magistrate Ann McLennan that she could produce the ticket by the day’s end.

Brown was fined $50,000 and ordered to return to his homeland.
