Broken phone, leaning GPL post – no action on either

Dear Editor,

I am a resident of Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice and I’ve been having problems with my landline telephone service for about two months now.

I made several complaints to GT&T and they promised to send a technician. No one came but when I called again about two weeks ago I was told that the phone is working. I decided to borrow my neighbour’s phone and plug it into my line to test it out and to my surprise it worked. It shows clearly that the problem is with the device and even though the telephone company is aware of it, they have not replaced it.

It is not fair for me to spend almost $5,000 to purchase a new phone when I am paying a monthly rent to the company for the use of its device. Besides, I am a poor man and the money I earn is barely enough for me to survive. Whenever I have to make an important call I have to borrow the neighbour’s phone and plug it into my line. I cannot be bothering people all the time and I am pleading with the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Co to replace my broken phone as soon as possible.

I would also like to highlight an issue regarding the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) that is affecting me and some other residents in my street.

For the longest while an electrical post which has a huge crack in the middle is leaning and we are afraid that it would fall at any time. The workers came to check out the problem after we called a few times and they promised to return, but up to now we have not seen them.

Yours faithfully,
