Anna Catherina man fined over theft of nurse’s handbag

An 18-year-old, accused of stealing a nurse’s handbag, was on Thursday fined $100,000 or an alternative of 18 months imprisonment at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.

Magistrate Sunil Scarce heard that on June 30 at the Oscar Joseph District Hospital, Charity, Ramkumar Kissoon of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, stole a handbag, property of Wendy Fernandes, a nurse attached to the Charity Hospital.

According to the prosecution, Fernandes left her handbag in an office. In her bag she had a BlackBerry Torch cellular phone, valued $78,000, $9,000 and the bag was valued at $4,500.

When she returned to the office, she noticed that several window panes were missing from the window and she also discovered that her handbag was missing.

She alerted the security guard at the hospital and after inquiries, contact was made with Kissoon. He was taken to the Charity Police Station, where he admitted to the offence. He said that he sold the phone to a man called ‘Rastaman’. The other items were not recovered.

Kissoon, who was not represented, said he had no money to pay the fine and he was subsequently taken into custody of the state.
