Witness in girlfriend strangling trial says accused killed sister

Alain Gilgeous, testifying via Skype, yesterday said murdered accused Paul Anthony Lo Hing killed his sister and then called him to carry her to the hospital.

Lo Hing is accused of strangling girlfriend Shoala Gilgeous in 2012, at their E’ Field, Sophia home. He is standing trial before a 12 member jury and Justice Diana Insanally in the High Court.

Defense attorney Hukumchand asked Alain if Lo Hing killed his sister and he quickly replied: “Yes, he kill my sister because nobody gon’ walk off the road and do she nothing like that.”

“Paul and my sister was living together alone,” he added.

Gilgeous told the court, via Skype from Trinidad, that he was travelling on the road when he received a call from Lo Hing, who asked of his whereabouts. He said he related to Lo Hing that he was on the road but a few minutes later the man called again and instructed him to check on his sister.

He stated that when he returned to his apartment, he saw Lo Hing entering the yard with a phone charger on his shoulder. Gilgeous further stated that he left Sophia and drove up to Splashmins Resort and it was there he received another call from Lo Hing.

He said Lo Hing told him that his sister was not moving. “He said you better come and take your sister to the hospital, she ain’t moving,” he said, adding that he immediately called his older sister to check on her.

He added that he then went to the East La Penitence Police Station to make a report. Two police officers followed him to his sister’s apartment and there they saw her motionless body. “I saw my sister lying on her back like she was sleeping. She had slime and blood coming out her mouth corner,” he recalled to the court.

Gilgeous said sometime prior to his sister’s death, Lo Hing and her had a fight outside of their apartment and he had told the man that he “can’t be beating my [his] sister like that”.

He said he was aware of constant fights between the two since Lo Hing moved into their adjoining apartment in February of that year.

Earlier this week, Shoala Gilgeous’ neighbor Monica Charles testified that she had heard the couple arguing earlier that day but the house was quiet when she returned to her house. She said she was accustomed to hearing the two fight and argue, therefore she did not think anything serious had happened.

Shoala’s niece also testified that she was the first person to discover the body.

The couple had been living together for about 10 months and Gilgeous’ relatives said she was a victim of domestic abuse and had made numerous reports to police about her situation.

The case is adjourned until Monday morning.
