Probation report ordered for man, 64, accused of theft

An elderly man was remanded to prison yesterday after being accused of stealing over $100,000 in gold jewellery. Oswald Norton, 64, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry where he pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny. It was related to the court that on May 14, in Bourda Market, Norton stole $190,000 in gold jewellery as well as $10,000 from Patricia Bowen.

Norton pleaded with the court to allow him to repay the sum of money, lamenting that he was sorry for committing the offence. When questioned about what he did with the items after stealing it, Norton admitted to selling the jewellery and spending the money. However, he said that he is currently working as a mason but he has not been paid yet. According to the VC, Norton promised to repay the sum a long time ago but has failed to do so.
