A driver who attempted to escape after hitting down a motorcyclist within feet of police officers on Vlissingen Road was captured shortly after.

The incident occurred at the corner of Vlissingen Road and Hadfield Street, within sight of officers who were providing security at the Ministry of Health’s Health Fair at the Square of the Revolution.

Nathan Walters, 22, of North Ruimveldt, was riding his motorcycle along Hadfield Street, heading east, when he attempted to cross Vlissingen Road. He was struck by a silver vehicle with licence plate PPP 7073.

Walters was flung off of his motorcycle while a number of drinks he had been carrying spilt across the road; the bike then hit the side of another vehicle which was heading west along Hadfield Street.

The noise of the accident quickly drew patrons of the Health Fair who rushed to the assistance of Walters.

Meanwhile, the car sped off but was immediately pursued by an officer on a motorcycle, who managed to stop the driver and escort him back to the scene a few minutes later. While Walters received medical attention at the health fair, persons swarmed around the driver’s car and called for him to step out.

“Let he out leh we beat he!” one person called out. Others loudly expressed their disgust at the man’s attempt to flee the scene of the accident.

He was taken into police custody along with Walters’ motorcycle.

Walters was able to walk away from the accident with minor injuries.
