Porter remanded over chopping relative in the back

A porter from Adventure, Essequibo Coast is the latest guest of the state after he was charged with felonious wounding.

Appearing at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court, 21-year-old Uroy Chapelle called ‘Boxy’ pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on September 19, he wounded Delroy Stephen.

According to the police, on the day in question Chapelle was at the home of Stephens who is his relative. At around 7.45 pm, Stephen’s wife sent him to buy oil and while walking down the step, he felt a hard knock to his back and felt blood running down his shoulders. When he turned around, Chapelle had a 20” chopper in his hand.

The police related that Stephen then asked Chapelle why he had chopped him, but he didn’t reply. Stephen ran to his friend’s house nearby and the friend took him to the hospital where he was admitted and later released.             A report was made to the police and Chapelle was later arrested and charged. When asked by Magistrate Sunil Scarce if he accepted the prosecution’s facts, Chapelle said he could not remember what happened, nor could he recall if he had submitted a statement in the matter.

Police Prosecutor Haimwant Ramsewak objected to bail on the grounds that Chapelle has no fixed place of abode, since according to him, Chapelle had given the police his address as Kabakaburi, Upper Pomeroon River but told the Court that he lives at Adventure, Essequibo Coast. He said that if placed on bail, Chapelle may not return to court.

Bail was refused and Chapelle who was not represented was remanded to prison until October 16 when the matter will be called again.
