‘I just hope Marvin’s murder don’t go cold’

More than a month after Marvin Cumbermack was killed during a robbery in Sophia, the police are yet to charge anyone with the man’s murder.

Cumbermack, 29, was killed on the evening of August 11 as he made his way to his girlfriend’s Sophia home from work. According to reports, the Guyana Water and Incorporated (GWI) employee was on his motorcycle when he was intercepted by a bandit. He put up a fight and was subsequently shot.

Three persons were previously held by police but were released.

When contacted by Stabroek News about whether there had been any further arrests in her son’s death, Claire Carrington responded,

“I wan’ know myself.” She continued, “They [the police’ ain’t calling me at all. The last time I went to them they said that they’re following all the leads they got.” Carrington added that though the police took her number, she was never contacted. She is unsure just what “leads” they were following.

Crime Chief Leslie James told Stabroek News that he is not aware of any new arrests thus far. However, he stated that the police presence in Sophia has been increased, with more foot and vehicle patrols being conducted. He explained that police presence is a requirement in all communities, especially those where crime is a problem.

Meanwhile, Carrington is unsure of her next step. “I don’t know what to do,” she said. “I feeling lost ’cause they aren’t saying anything to me; I don’t know what’s going on. I’m just feeling…,” she trailed off.

She added that she has been hearing many reports, including some indicating that her son’s motorbike had been recovered. However, none of these reports have not come from the police and are therefore unconfirmed. “I just hope Marvin’s murder don’t go cold,” she further said.
